It was an easy slow day for us to get to know a bit of Mumbles. We walked down to the Pier and had lunch there. Some more hiking over to the lighthouse and Bracelet Bay for the view and back to the Pier, where we ran into Kiki Babs, a drag queen having a photo session. It was a very funny situation because she pretended to be caught behind bars, where a sign said: “Danger Keep Out – no unauthorized access”, and right in that moment a policeman appeared and he took it with British humour. Same with the life guards, who let her play on their dinghy. We had so much to laugh.
We strolled along the promenade and learned that Mumbles had something in common with Starnberg, because it once was cut off from the Sea by a railway line. The only disadvantage for Starnberg is that we have to keep on living with this obstacle between the lake and the city as we will not be in the situation of closing down the railway line like Mumbles did.
We walked up to Oystermouth Castle, which is an impressive ruin dating back to the 12th century. The flag of Wales was flying high above it.
For dinner we met up with the Rotarians at their meeting location at “The George”.
I could hand them over our pennant and the Saint James shell and show them my presentation and the 10 weeks in ten minutes. It was a nice reunion that we were able to arrange, after years of lost contact between the two Clubs. Nancy and Tom were planning to be in Munich end of July next year as they already had tickets for the Bregenz festival. So there’s a big chance our Clubs will be able to have more exchanges again in the future.
