6th of July we were spoiled with a wonderful “Liechtenstein-style-bredfast”, sorry breakfast. But the Bürli were just delicious with honey and jam from the mothers in law. A good coffee is never missing, because coffee runs through the veins of Peter Demmel. Today we had no lecture and therefore a little bit slower start. I used the early morning to finally write a bit down in our diary to update our blog on our website, because I still had’nt found a minute before to do so.
But nevertheless we had to leave, because I had made up an appointment with the Sacristan at 10:15 am at the church of Schaan to get our stamps for the way of Saint James in our pilgrim passes. Robert had the blues leaving, because we made some new friends with Renate and Peter and they were waving their hands, when we rolled down into the Rhine valley.
As Liechtenstein seems to be really the smallest place we met by coincidence at the next turn the Interior Minister of Liechtenstein Herbert Büchel on his bike and he wished us all the best for our “Less-is-more-Tour”. I was filming the downhill ride all the way to the entrance of the church of Schaan to be in time to get our stamps.
Well filming can cause funny unexpected situations as we continued our way along the river Rhine dam. There was a beautiful wooden bridge and I followed into it with the camera. Returning back to our tour-trail I expected Robert still to come, but he must have been much faster than I expected. I kept waiting and waiting and waiting for him in Vaduz and tried to call him, finally I got an answer from the next village Balzers, where he was waiting for me
When we finally joined again on the Rhine dam the horizon looked really dark and a heavy rain shower caught us and many other families on their Sunday bike excursion, who were hiding under a bridge. No reason to stop us as we were wet anyways. Continuing our way to Landquart the sun came out and we let the clothes dry directly on us. We were lucky to be accompanied by strong tail wind.
Chur is the first and oldest town in the Alps as it was already founded by the Romans. It’s also the town for the bishop of Chur in Grisons, who has the castle and cathedral up on a hill. We got our stamps and enjoyed “Capuns” a traditional food in the old historic centre.
Following our way up the river Rhine the clouds got again darker and darker and just ten minutes before we arrived at our friends house it started to rain. Finding shelter in their garage a thunderstorm started with lightning and heavy rain. We made it just in time.
A relaxed afternoon with tea followed and long talks, while the washing machine was helping us with our clothes and the oven smelled already with the dessert. It was still a wonderful barbecue with fresh salat and homemade chocolate cookies, which rounded up the day.
